Hardcover (Viking Press, Aug. 16, 1968)
Mouse House is the story of a special doll house built just for mice and about the mouse family who lives in it. It is written by Margaret Rumer Godden OBE (1907 – 1998), an English author of more than 60 fiction and nonfiction books, mostly written for adults but 11 written for children. A number of Godden's novels are set in India, the atmosphere of which she evokes through all the senses; her writing is vivid with detail of smells, textures, light, flowers, noises and tactile experiences. Her books for children, especially her several doll stories, strongly convey the secret thoughts, confusions and disappointments, and aspirations of childhood. Mouse House is her most famous childrens' book. It is beautifully illustrated by Adrienne Adams (1906 - 2002), a children's book illustrator. She won two Caldecott Honors (in 1960 and 1962) and in 1973 she was awarded the Rutgers Award for overall contributions to children’s literature.
